And with a blink of an eye its September! The evenings are starting to draw in, there is a different feel in the air and it seems that every time I turn around there’s another spider or Daddy Long Legs (aka crane fly) taking residence in our house!

Anyway, I don’t know about you but this time of year always gets me thinking about what I can do around the house to prepare for winter. Its as if I start nesting. I’ve been making a mental list of all the jobs I am going to do over the next coming weeks so I thought I would share some inexpensive ideas of how to spruce up your house ready for hibernation season.

GET GLOSSING

Adding a lick of paint to the skirting boards and woodwork really lifts a room without having to go to the expense of redecorating the whole room. Everything just feels cleaner and fresher with a bit of gloss. So have your masking tape and a steady hand at the ready and get glossing!

STORAGE

Along with the winter months comes boots, heavier coats and outerwear. I know I have mentioned storage before but I always think a tidy house is a tranquil house. Extra coat hooks or storage baskets for shoes are a fairly inexpensive way to clear away the clutter. Online stores such as Wayfair have some great storage solutions such as shoe benches and wall organizers.

UPCYCLING FURNITURE

Have you thought about upcycling some of your old furniture? You might be bored of your old dining room chairs, or your chest of drawers might be looking a little tired. Well you would be surprised how some new handles and some paint can transform an unloved piece of furniture and it’s so much cheaper than buying new! There are lots of furniture paints on the market that are really easy to use such as Annie Sloan. With so many beautiful colours to choose from you’ll be spoiled for choice. You could even go out of your comfort zone and go bold to make a statement!

ACCESSORIZE

My last quick fix is to update your home with some accessories. Maybe some bright tableware and serving dishes for when you are rustling up those winter delights? Or some thick bath mats and towels that will instantly add warmth to a bathroom. Some new bed linen and pillows in a different colour can quickly transform a bedroom.

Well I hope these ideas have given you some food for thought. Let me know in the comments how you get on with your upcycling if you decide to give it a go.

Happy Home styling!
